10 Minute Family Dinners guaranteed to please
What do you pull out of the bag when your kids are hungry and you need to put dinner on the table, but time is short? Beans on toast? Microwaved curry? Tin of soup? Or would you rather have a hearty, healthy casserole that will feed the whole family and only takes 10 minutes to prepare? That’s the challenge OXO gave us when they sent us some of their Herbs and More flavour pots to create a recipe for their 10 minute dinners list. In fact, they asked to to make it even more simple than that – they wanted the kids to create the recipes, and The Bug was more than willing.
OXO sent us some recipe cards for inspiration, but The Bug wanted sausages. He and GG are happy to eat Puy lentils too, so I suggested a Sausage and Lentil casserole, that we could spice up with one of the flavour pots. He decided that carrots would be a nice addition, and chose Rosemary and Thyme as his flavour enhancer. Check out his very own recipe in the video below.
10 Minute Dinners – Quick Sausage and Lentil Casserole Recipe
The Bug (aged 7) had this to say about his recipe creation:
I love to cook, I don’t often get to, because Mummy is such a control freak, but thanks to OXO I was more or less left to my own devices, and I even got to boss my Mum around a bit! I chose the Rosemary and Thyme flavourpots because I know I like garlic bread when it has rosemary on it; I chose to add 2 pots because I can’t be doing with gentle flavours! (But just so you know, if you like things a bit less strong, OXO say that 1 pot is enough for 4 people).
I was pretty keen to chop the carrots myself, so it did take maybe a tad longer than 10 minutes, but you could ask your kitchen assistant (aka designated adult) to do that for you. I also gave my kitchen assistant the job of frying the sausages – have you seen how hot those frying pans get?? Plus sausages tend to spit at you, which is very rude…
Once the prep is done, you just put everything into the slow cooker for 5-8 hours on medium heat, or into a normal oven at around 130 deg C for 2 hours, and come home to a lovely dinner! We served ours with garlic mash, because it’s what we had leftover in the fridge, but you could use rice or even pasta.
Everybody was very keen on this casserole (you can tell that by the lack of images – it all just got scoffed before Mummy remembered to get her camera out!). As a result I have volunteered myself to cook every night from now on.
