Top tips for upgrading your home exterior

When you care about your home and you want to take care of it, starting from the outside seems a reasonable place to begin. You want to take pride in the appearance of your house and often, that means looking at the curb appeal it can offer first. This is especially true when you’ve spent years saving for a deposit to get the house of your dreams in a neighborhood of similar houses that are well taken care of.

The home exterior is the first impression that you give to everybody, which means that this is the place that requires a little bit of extra attention. You have to remember also that the exterior of your home is often under a lot of pressure from outside climate issues, weather issues, and in the winter that we’re approaching right now, you want to prepare as much as possible to withstand the cold.

Whether you want to blend your home in or stand out, upgrading your home exterior is a good place to start. Finding the best power washer to get your driveway cleaned down, or even taking a sponge and a squeegee to the windows to get them shining is just the basics. So let’s take a look at some of the top tips for upgrading your home exterior so that it stands out for all the good reasons.

  1. Work from the top down. Start with the roof and move down the house. Glancing up and seeing the architecture of all of your neighbors roofs can give you that FOMO feeling. So you need to look at making sure that your home doesn’t look like the ramshackle among all the beautiful homes in the neighbourhood. If your roof needs an upgrade then you need to get a roofer in. And it’s not just about the visual appeal. Your roof may have some serious foundational malfunctions and you want to make sure that your home exterior reflects the modern interior that you’ve been working on.
  2. Give your home a little texture. If you love moving through each room of the house and adding new decor, new rugs and new colours, then you need to make sure that your outdoor experience is the same. Sure, you may not decide to add rugs to your flower beds, but you need to look at the flower beds and the plants and make sure that there is texture and height in all of it. You could have small bushes and large towering sunflowers, or you could have tall hedges with small sweet peas at the bottom. Adding texture to your house on the exterior gives it some character and personality.
  3. Go bold with your colour choices. The trim of your home can be beige and white and blend in with the rest of the house, or you can pick your favorite colour and paint it that colour instead. If you’ve ever gone to a vintage village in old England, then you know that red trim is very popular because it makes the red brick stand out. The accent trim of your home doesn’t have to match any other type of trend or any type of vintage. It just has to match you and your family. Going bold with your colour choices allows your home to stand out and look fantastically impressive.

Upgrade your shutters. When was the last time you upgraded the shutters on the exterior of your home? If you’re living somewhere particularly windy, you know that your shutters actually have a practical purpose. But if you just have shutters for aesthetics, then keeping them upgraded is important. You don’t want to have shutters with peeling paint or with broken hinges. Upgrade the hinges to be something tough and long lasting like titanium and give the whole thing a new lick of paint. In fact, if you paint the shutters of your home to match the trim that we talked about earlier, then you can bet your home is going to stand out and look chocolate box perfect.
