I love to read. I read anywhere and all the time; I frequently generate grumbles from my parents by asking them to carry a bag load of my books on train journeys and trips to the supermarket. You just never know when you might get some down-time, and a book fills it like nothing else.
This amount of reading has rendered me practiced at quickly decoding words, and so I’m always looking for the next challenge. But at the age of 9, many of the books I’m capable of reading are deemed unsuitable my my mother, or too complex by yours truly. So this week we put out a call for help – a request for good reads for a good reader aged 9 and 10.
We got a ton of fantastic recommendations – come back on Wednesday to see our entire list – but this was by far the most exciting thing to happen in response to our request. A visit from local teacher Kirsty at Damson Lane, who plucked her favourites from her Year 5 and 6 bookshelf and delivered them to us to borrow.
So the story of this week’s photo is about reading; it is about friends, community, generosity, and the warm glow you get from knowing that there is another book lover to inspire the next phase of your reading, just around the corner.
How lovely to get a delivery from a fellow blogger! I’m forever trying to encourage my girl (7) to read more as at her age my head was always buried in a book. My own fault maybe for letting modern tech and gadgets in our lives too much?? Love the pic at the top 🙂
Thank you. I think it’s hard when there is so much else to do in this day and age. I’m lucky to have such and avid reader, and The Bug is following in her footsteps 🙂
Reading is super duper … having books delivered really is even better!! ..enjoy x
Holes and Goodnight Mr. Tom…brilliant books and so pleased to see them in the pile! It’s lovely when children want to read 🙂
You look absolutely beautiful in that photo. Reading is a great interest and how amazing you have got such an excellent collection of books to work your way through. I hope my wee man fosters an interest in reading…thankfully he is heading down the right path so far.
love the photo and I do wish my children were into reading books as you are xx
Ah Kirsty is a good egg!
I love that photo of GG – perfect, looks really natural. Are you liking your new camera? x
I’m very slowly finding my way around what it does, which I don’t like, but I’m finding myself keen to persevere. Interestingly, the improvement in my pictures comes more from practical tips, than from the functions of my camera, so it just goes to show, you don’t need a fancy camera to take really great shots!
Reading is so much more than finishing a book and moving onto the next. It opens up new worlds and other lives to you. I hope you enjoy some of books in the bundle and you could recommend your favourites to me as I’m sure you have read lots of books I haven’t 🙂
You can’t beat a good book. I love reading but don’t have a lot of time to sit and read. Whereas, Z aged 6, loves to read and is working his way through Harry Potter just now. He’s on to the fourth book. I’ll keep an eye out for your posts about the books you are reading 🙂
Great shot of GG.
Big readers here too – just hope N continues to enjoy books as much as I do (rather than talking after his father who doesn’t read them at all).
I clearly need better bloggy friends… lol 🙂 do you have any that deliver alcohol…? 🙂 xx
I have been known to take delivery of #frozenwine…
It is wonderful that your daughter loves to read. Books bring everything alive.
What a beautiful photo of GG! It is definitely a girl thing. My boys don’t seem bothered by books at all but my (almost) 6yo would take her books with her everywhere. She is officially a bookworm. Any recommendations for an advanced 6yo reader?
Oooh good stage to be at! I remember the thrill of finally leaving behind the Rainbow Fairies that she cut her solo teeth on. David Walliams and Roald Dahl would be our favourites, especially for reading together, although The Bug manages them on his own. Diary of a Wimpy Kid, or Tom Gates – I hate them both, but the kids can read them alone, and love them. Stick Dog is similar. We also loved the Magic Faraway Tree and Wishing Chair Collections around that age, and The Bug is currently reading The Giants and the Joneses, which is fun.
That is so nice, and such a good idea to put out a request. Lovely photo x
What a lucky little girl to have so many books to choose from 🙂 I love reading too! And so does my three-year-old. I’m hoping that she’ll still love books when she’s older 🙂 #WhatsTheStory.
I do wish my younger ones had the same love of books. Clio is the closest but the boys have no interest. Lovely looking from above photo too.
So happy to hear that you’re already passionate about books, hopefully this will continue when you’re all grown up as well. My daughters loved anything by Michael Morpurgo – I’m guessing you’ve tackled a few of these already? The Molly Moon series by Georgia Byng were also very popular.
We are beginning to get into Morpurgo, after a false start. She finds any kind of trauma difficult because she worries, and there is often a problem or some sadness in a Morpurgo plot. We’re getting there though, as long as I read with her.
I love that photo of her from above- it’s gorgeous! We are massive book worm’s in this house- and it is one passion that I will always push my kids into. I love everything about getting lost in a book with them. x
That photo of GG is just wonderful Helen – I love it. It’s great she enjoys books so much and Kirsty was able to offer suitable recommendations. GG must be in her element! Lovely post, thanks for sharing #whatsthestory
gorgeous image! x
Ah what a great picture! My son is turning into a bookworm and has just started reading an awful lot. I love it! So glad readingo t him everyday seems to be paying off
Definitely – reading was the only thing that calmed her down as a baby.
such a beautiful young lady (cannot imagine who she takes after??) and so lovely to see and read about her love of books and reading them. i was always a book worm – i would read a book so fast! wish i had the time now really x
We have to go to bed earlier and sacrifice the social media Jenny!
I love that picture of her from above! I’m always trying to get my girl (7) to read more. I always had my head buried in a book at her age (still do, given half the chance), but she’s not as into it. And how great to have someone come and drop off a whole lot of books- heaven on earth!
Beautiful picture, love the angle and the focus is defo all about those peepers! #BetterPhotosProject
Really love the picture you took of her from above! And I’m a book lover too heheee. So good to have your little girl brought up surrounded by books.
